Reducing Noise Pollution from Loudspeakers in Residential Areas

May 22, 2026 Suggestions

In many neighborhoods, street vendors such as vegetable sellers, fruit sellers, and other mobile vendors use loudspeakers to attract customers while moving through lanes. While this may help them promote their goods, it creates significant noise pollution and disturbance for residents.

This constant noise can be particularly problematic for:

  • NPatients who need rest and a quiet environment
  • NChildren and elderly individuals who may be sleeping
  • NWorking professionals attending office calls or working from home
  • NPeople engaged in important phone conversations or studies

My Suggestion:

The use of loudspeakers for selling goods in residential streets should be completely stopped. Instead, vendors can use normal voice calls or other non-disruptive methods to attract customers.

Additionally, a simple community-driven rule can be introduced:

If any vendor uses a loudspeaker and causes disturbance, the affected person should have the right to impose a fine of ₹500 on the vendor.

Why This Suggestion Can Work:

  • NIt reduces dependency on police for minor issues, allowing them to focus on more serious matters
  • NThe fear of paying repeated fines will discourage vendors from using loudspeakers
  • NIt promotes self-regulation within the community
  • NIt ensures a more peaceful and comfortable environment for everyone

If implemented properly, this small step can bring a big improvement in maintaining peace and reducing noise pollution in residential areas.
